In reply to Ibrahim Mahmood’s article “Are internships a waste of time in Pakistan?” the following article discusses how QriosityNet can provide solutions to some of the issues raised in this article.

Four years of higher education in the desired field and still not an ideal candidate to be hired or failing to fulfil the set criteria for a suitable trainee/ intern?
This is almost certainly because these students are professionally qualified and have a vast amount of theoretical knowledge, but they are at a loss when asked to operate on practical grounds.
Both, abstract skills that involve cognitive effort, such as devising a plan, and concrete skills that come in handy practically in the professional world have been taught by respective universities during all undergraduate years of education. Still, there is a significant gap in practical exposure, guidance about real-world technicalities, and specific strategies to be carried out and be of use in the corporate sector. This means that students’ minds have been flooded with theoretical knowledge and comprehensive data without any experience in how to practically apply this immense amount of theory and information into real-world settings. This is akin to knowing the step-by-step recipe for a food dish but being unable to prepare it.
Furthermore, there is a significant lack of discipline among new hires in terms of corporate responsibilities, punctuality, or overall performance. When it comes to addressing problems in the 21st century, conventional schooling falls short. This advanced period requires the teaching of advanced and more adaptable skills such as critical thinking, complex problem solving, emotional intelligence, people management, judgement and decision making, cognitive versatility, logical thinking, and so on.

Besides the lack of practical exposure, a student’s schooling is often to be blamed for not producing a student who is a good match for a reputable internship.
Our educational institutions continue to provide outdated and subpar education. Even if theoretical knowledge is being provided, the standard and material taught needs to be improved according to the advancement and progress of the existing era of development.
Along with this, the education provided should enlighten the students as to what qualities and skills a good employee should possess. Our educational institutions’ theoretical syllabuses do not contribute to the production of responsible employees or suitable citizens, instead of focusing solely on the production of university professors. To build good employees or citizens, soft skills such as professionalism, honesty and integrity, problem-solving abilities, dependability, creativity, and so on can be taught.

According to a Harvard report, “85% of one’s success at work is attributed to soft skills, with just 15% attributed to technical skills.”

QriosityNet offers features to students that serve as a springboard for their academic and career success.
These features include a resume creation tool that attracts the attention of employers and recruiters, sells a student’s best skills and achievements, demonstrates how he or she is a fit for a specific role or project, and, most importantly, secures the student a job interview. The other features include different groups where students of different levels and fields can interact with each other, career counselling which helps in goal setting and identifying career choices and another feature of personal statement help.

How does QriosityNet assist students in seeking internships that meet their requirements and expectations?
QriosityNet focuses on providing students with their digital student profile and then providing them with access to unlimited opportunities specific to their area of expertise. QriosityNet’s global platform allows these students to narrow down and apply only for internships that cater for their specific needs.
QriosityNet also creates the digital student profile which allows both students and teachers to track progress over time, academically or professionally. Digital student profiles provide educational institutes with insight into students’ educational achievements, allowing them to grant suitable opportunities. These digital student profiles also help teachers to develop feedback on the students’ performance to facilitate their further potential and expertise.
Aside from this, QriosityNet has several groups where students can share their questions and information while exploring specific topics related to their field of interest, such as STEM education, internships, interview tips, summer camps, and so on. This way, QriosityNet collaboratively adds value to the student profile while also addressing their questions about their educational and professional lives.

In terms of specific needs, what is the primary motivator for any student to sign up for an internship?
Its primary purpose is to improve the practical knowledge and skills related to their qualification. The main goal of an internship is to bring what has been learned and researched so far into action and learn how to apply it. This skill-building internship experience would add value and prestige to the student’s profile, further validating him/her as a suitable candidate and a promising employee certified for the professional world.
So, when it comes to seeking a suitable internship, students are unable to find a particular one due to a large number of opportunities. To evaluate these opportunities further, you must sign up for dozens of websites/platforms, which means creating several student profiles and keeping them held up to date, which is humanly impossible.
As a result, registering on QrisoityNet and building only one student profile will provide you with a plethora of student-centred resources and opportunities on a single platform.

One issue that this article does not address is how fresh graduates come across jobs that recruit recent graduates but need a certain amount of experience.
How will the applicant be experienced in his/her field of work if this is their first job ever? It’s a perplexing and discouraging situation for the job applicant who wonders, “So I can’t get a job without experience, and I can’t get experience without a job?”. This brings up the question of how can one acquire any experience at all when every job requires a certain level of experience.
One of the main goals of QriosityNet is to provide career opportunities for recently graduated individuals with no too minimal level of experience. Unlike other job search sites, which do not prioritize the needs of students or recent graduates and instead only provide jobs to highly qualified and experienced individuals.

To sum up, QriosityNet fills the 2–3-year gap by providing students with the necessary skills that employers seek, increasing their value in the professional world and this set of skills and experience is provided to students, particularly before they graduate.
